Mini Dental Implants In Essendon

Mini dental implants for dentures

Struggling with loose or uncomfortable dentures? Mini dental implants can give them the stability they’ve been missing.

Mini implants are a smaller, less invasive option designed to anchor dentures securely in place. At FirstBite Dental, we use modern imaging and precise placement techniques to help patients eat, speak, and smile with far more confidence.

What Are Mini Dental Implants?

Mini dental implants are smaller versions of traditional dental implants used to stabilise dentures. They are designed specifically for patients who need additional denture support but may not be suitable candidates for full-sized implants.
The MDI denture stabilisation system typically includes:

  • Small titanium alloy implants placed in the jawbone
  • A metal housing built into the denture base
  • A rubber O-ring inside the housing that connects the denture to the implant

Once the implants are placed, the denture snaps securely onto them and stays in place.
Many modern systems, including 3M Mini Implants, are designed to provide reliable denture retention with a minimally invasive procedure.

Who Are Mini Dental Implants Suitable For?

Mini dental implants can be a good option for patients who:

  • Have loose or unstable lower dentures
  • Don’t have enough bone for traditional implants
  • Prefer a less invasive treatment option
  • Are looking for a more affordable implant solution
  • Cannot undergo more complex implant surgery

Because mini implants are narrower than conventional implants, they often require less bone and can be placed with a simpler procedure.

The Mini Dental Implant Procedure

The placement of mini dental implants is typically completed in a single appointment.

The procedure is performed in our dental surgery using a local anaesthetic. Most treatments take around two hours, depending on how many implants are required.

During the procedure:

  • Small diameter implants (around 2 millimetres wide) are gently inserted into the jawbone.
  • The top of each implant sits slightly above the gum and forms a small ball-shaped connector.
  • Metal housings containing rubber O-rings are placed inside the denture base.
  • The denture is then positioned so the O-rings snap securely over the implant heads.

This connection allows the denture to remain stable while still resting comfortably on the gums.

Systems such as 3M Mini dental implants are specifically designed for this snap-fit stabilisation method.

Benefits of Mini Dental Implants

Many patients choose mini dental implants because they offer several advantages over traditional denture solutions:

  • Improved denture stability
  • Greater comfort when eating and speaking
  • A minimally invasive placement procedure
  • Faster treatment compared to full implants
  • Lower overall treatment cost

With properly placed implants, dentures remain stable during everyday activities while still being removable for cleaning.

Recovery and Aftercare

Recovery after mini-implant placement is generally straightforward. Most patients experience minimal discomfort and can return to normal activities quickly.

Your dentist will provide guidance on caring for your implants and dentures. Maintaining good oral hygiene and attending regular dental check-ups helps keep the implants and surrounding tissues healthy.

Problem

Because the loss of most of the front teeth on his top row of teeth (due to trauma impact and infection), this patient was very self-conscious about his smile.

He wanted to feel confident in smiling again, so he came to visit us.

Treatment

On the first visit, we affix mini dental implants, after we have prepared the gum tissue and surrounding teeth. We then sealed a bridge-like denture to the implants.

At the second visit, we placed porcelain crowns on the two remaining front teeth, to help them blend in with the mini dental implants. The second visit is usually two weeks later.
