What is general dentistry?

General dentistry is a prime concern for all patients at our Essendon dental clinic, as it is the foundation for ensuring a healthy future for your teeth and gums. We provide an extensive general dentistry service covering regular dental hygiene maintenance through to Root Canals and Emergency Dental Help.

Good oral care habits are essential to the lifelong health of your teeth and gums. When you educate yourself about proper tooth and gum care, you’ll also learn about the cause of and treatment for common dental conditions. Armed with this knowledge, you’ll be able to better understand and follow your dental professional’s recommendations.

To familiarise yourself with basic tooth anatomy, look at the diagram below, which illustrates the parts of a tooth. The diagram also highlights the relationship between teeth and gums.
Anatomy of a tooth

Healthy gingiva (gums) hold teeth in place at the root, and attaches them to the gum line to create a seal that blocks bacteria from penetrating sensitive tissue below.

To maintain healthy, well-functioning teeth and gums and to guard against disease, it’s essential that you undertake daily brushing and flossing. Depending on the condition of your teeth and gums, your dental professional may also recommend the use of anti-plaque, anti-cavity or antibacterial rinse, a plaque fighting toothpaste, a specialty toothbrush, a specialty floss or a power-assisted plaque remover.
