Composite Veneers in Essendon

For many years, cosmetic dentistry has used composite veneers to improve a smile’s appearance. People may also refer to composite veneers as composite bonding or dental bonding.

Composite resin veneers have become a popular cosmetic dentistry offering because they’re versatile and provide a natural look. In addition, they are an easy and affordable cosmetic dentistry procedure.

What are composite veneers?

Composite veneers are made of a composite polymer resin paste, which bonds to your teeth. Think of the resin as a putty-like material, which hardens to the same consistency as ceramic. The tooth-coloured resin contains material including blends of quartz, silica, polymer and glass.

Your dentist applies the paste to your teeth to create a new surface or veneer.

The dental bonding process for composite veneers

The process begins with your dentist using a specially-formulated solution to make the surface of your teeth slightly rough. Having a rough tooth surface means bonding resin will firmly adhere to your teeth.

Your dentist applies the bonding resin to your teeth layer by layer. Your dentist uses intense light throughout the process to cure and seal the resin. When your dentist achieves the final shape and colour, your new veneers are polished to give a natural look.

Applying composite veneers usually occurs in one visit. This is a big time-saver, instead of waiting to manufacture customised porcelain veneers and crowns off-site in a dental lab.

Why might I need composite veneers?

You may want to consider dental bonding (composite veneers) to:

  • repair chipped or cracked teeth
  • improve the appearance of discoloured teeth
  • repair decayed teeth (the composite resin can fill cavities)
  • close gaps and reshape misaligned teeth
  • make your teeth look longer
  • change the shape of your teeth
  • protect segments of a tooth’s root that become exposed when gums begin to recede.

Composite veneers (dental bonding) are also a cosmetic alternative for people with amalgam fillings.

Composite dental veneers may be a good choice if you’re looking for small cosmetic changes or correction of teeth in low-bite areas of the mouth.

Advantages of composite veneers

  • Easy to repair
  • Can be applied in one visit
  • There is no need to wait for laboratory manufacturing
  • Less expensive than porcelain veneers
  • Rarely require the removal of existing tooth structures
  • Can be easily removed if other parts of the teeth need to be treated.

Disadvantages of composite veneers

  • Not as strong as porcelain veneers
  • Not as resistant to stains as crowns or porcelain veneers
  • The bonding resin can break off the tooth more easily.

Problem

The gaps between this patient’s teeth were due to orthodontic reasons as well as naturally having a smaller tooth size.

The usual course of treatment would have involved orthodontics to close the gaps. As a compromise, we advised the patient to have treatment for porcelain or composite veneers.

Treatment

The patient chose composite veneers, as the more affordable option. Over 1 hour, we affixed the sturdy composite bonding resin.

The patient also had teeth whitening treatment before the composite bonding.
