What are peg laterals?

Peg laterals are a condition in which the tooth on either side of the front upper teeth (called the maxillary lateral incisor) does not develop correctly. It is small and sometimes pointed, looking like an inverted cone or peg (hence the term peg laterals). There are many reasons why it develops this way, but genetics play a key role.

Technically, it is a form of microdontia. Microdonita refers to any tooth that may have developed to appear smaller than normal.

Treatment options for peg laterals

Before proceeding with any treatment options for peg laterals, it‘s crucial to assess the condition of your teeth. We need to determine if there is enough space between the front teeth and the canine to accommodate a normal-sized tooth. If there is not sufficient space, then orthodontic options like braces or Invisalign may be considered. Once enough space has been created, we can then proceed with treatments such as composite veneersporcelain veneers , or dental crowns.
